What is Matcha?
Matcha means powdered tea in Japanese. Matcha is made from green tea leaves. The stems and veins of the leaves are removed before it's ground into an ultra-fine powder using a stonemill. It is the only tea drink where the whole leaf is consumed.
Yes, it's that green
The tea leaves are shaded from the sun for 4 weeks before they are harvested. The plants compensate for the lack of sunlight by producing extra chlorophyll, giving it that intense vibrant green hue. This results in the accumulation of amazing good for you molecules including L-theanine, an amino acid that helps you relax, focus, regulate sleep, and fight inflammation. Matcha is also rich in catechins, a natural antioxidant that stabilizes harmful free radicals.
The Real Matcha standard
Matcha is grown across Asia. Some brands source from China or lower quality late season harvest. The best matcha-producing regions are located in the Shizuoka, Kyoto, Aichi, and Fukuoka prefectures of Japan. Real Matcha comes from Shizuoka prefecture and uses first harvest leaves. Shizuoka is known as the top tea producing region in Japan with the best weather conditions and the richest volcanic soil (In the foothills of Mt. Fuji), creating perfect conditions for matcha farming.
